Blunt Announces New Opportunities for Math and Science Programs

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today encouraged schools to apply for grant funding to expand Math & Science and Health related afterschool programs. The governor introduced and secured $1 million to support the new grants.

"Afterschool programs provide Missouri's students a safe environment when their parents are still at work," Blunt said. "This funding will be used to support quality afterschool programs that focus on math and science to prepare our students for the challenges of the global economy as well as programs focused on health and wellness."

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is facilitating the grant process and opened their request for proposals for Missouri public schools to apply for the funding. Funding will be awarded to expand Math & Science and Health related programming through afterschool grant opportunities.

Blunt created the Math, Engineering, Technology and Science (METS) initiative to help Missourians understand the importance of METS to our children's future and the state's ability to compete in the global economy. The governor successfully secured funding in the new state budget for 100 technology classrooms in 100 schools and incentives for more Missouri students to take Advanced Placement courses in math and science.
